7/70 Powertrain Warranty Underscores Chrysler, Dodge, Jeep® Quality

July 8th, 2002 - Starting July 9, 2002, Chrysler, Jeep® and Dodge vehicles are covered by a seven-year or 70,000-mile powertrain warranty on all new Chrysler Group vehicles. This industry-leading warranty is fully transferable to subsequent owners. It represents the Chrysler Group's long term multi-brand campaign to underscor quality gains.

Warranty costs for Chrysler Group products have decreased by 20 percent in the last model year, and by half since 1996. DaimlerChrysler officials believe the company's unique combination of American ingenuity and German engineering will help sustain high quality levels in the years ahead. Also at the root of the company's ability to offer this extensive warranty are substantial investments in new engines and transmissions for Chrysler Group vehicles--more than $7.5 billion during the past several years.

This special report supplements the warranty announcement with facts about features of the program, key quality statistics, a program logo and copies of print ads.

DaimlerChrysler Corporation today announced it will provide an industry-leading seven year/70,000-mile limited powertrain warranty on its Chrysler, Jeep ® and Dodge brand vehicles.

The warranty, which is fully transferable to subsequent owners at no extra cost, will be provided free of charge on all new Chrysler Group vehicles purchased or leased on or after July 9, 2002. Components covered by the "7/70 Powertrain Warranty" include engines, transmissions/transaxles, transfer cases and axles.

Powertrain component coverage becomes effective following the standard bumper-to-bumper coverage of three years or 36,000 miles on all other components, and extends to seven years or 70,000 miles, whichever comes first.

The 7/70 Powertrain Warranty covers all vehicle lines except select commercial fleet vehicles. Remaining 2002 models also will be covered by the new warranty.

"Simply stated, our overall quality levels have improved substantially while warranty costs have dropped 20 percent in the latest model year, and have been cut in half since 1996," said Dieter Zetsche, Chrysler Group President and Chief Executive Officer. "Our entire management group has a mindset of making quality the top priority, and this program is yet another milestone in our 'disciplined pizzazz' approach."

"Going forward, no one is better positioned to keep this priority in sharp focus as we combine American innovation and design with German quality and technology," added Zetsche. "This new warranty also enables us to break from the pack when it comes to customer peace-of-mind."

Additional PT Cruiser CRD Information from BBC Top Gear and Hoot!

PT Cruiser now has the option of a newly developed 2.2 litre four cylinder Common Rail Diesel (CRD) engine that is smooth and quiet with huge reserves of torque and instant response. The turbo diesel engine is combined with a 'short throw' Getrag five speed manual transmission to ensure smooth acceleration and relaxed cruising, coupled with excellent fuel economy characteristics at all times.

With 221lb ft of torque on tap from 1,600 to 2600rpm, the 2.2 CRD has about 60 per cent more torque than the petrol version. Which means that the 2.2 CRD feels much stronger and more eager in every normal circumstance except `pedal to the rev limiter' type driving, which is hardly normal.

What also matters is economy and as you might expect the new diesel scores here too, its combined mpg figure of 40.9 being almost 8mpg better than the two-litre's, but still a little way off some other particularly frugal two-litre diesels. However, none of these, a Chrysler spokesperson was keen to point out, are as powerful as this new 2.2-litre, with its best-in-class torque figure.

Actually, it's not strictly accurate to describe the 2.2 CRD as `new', as it's already doing sterling service in C-Class and E-Class Mercedes, (DaimlerChrysler remember?), though to slip it into the tighter engine bay of the Cruiser, a fair bit of re-engineering was required to make it fit.

The gearbox is a five-speed Getrag which has sporting connotations but, at least on the car I drove, didn't provide the slickest gearshifting experience. It never actually baulked a change, but try and go from second to reverse to first in a rush and it's a little unwilling to comply. (Incidentally, a clutchless electronic gearbox called Autostick is now available on the two-litre petrol version).

CRD Engine Compartment

1.6 Liter PT Cruiser
The photograph above shows the 1.6L engine used in the PT Cruiser. The information below is from km77.

PT Cruiser with motor of 1,6 liters of piston displacement . The price of this version varies between 18,000.00 € and 19,590.00 €. In January of 2002 Chrysler will put the PT Cruiser with diesel engine of 2,2 liters of piston displacement, denominated CRD on sale.

The motor that Chrysler uses is of BMW origin and has 116 CV . It is the same engine that is in the Mini Cooper and the Chrysler Neon 1.6. The PT Cruiser 1,6 16V will be sold exclusively with manual gear box of five speeds. Whoever wants a PT Cruiser with automatic will have to acquire the one that has the motor of 2,0 liters has and 141 CV of power.

It is possible to be acquired two levels of finished (Classic, the economic and Touring, most expensive) with this motor 1,6 liters, the difference of price between both is 1,590 €. the Touring has things that cannot be put in the Classic nor in option: antifog lights, 16" wider aluminum rims, tires and radio cassette with CD and 6 loudspeakers. An important and very recommendable equipment of security is the ABS ; only it can be had in the Touring and, in addition, of optional form. Cost is 955.61 € and includes the traction control.

It is a comfortable monovolume (by space and suspensions) for four people and something narrow for five. He is more maneuverable than the 2.0; this one 1,6 tour in 10,8 meters instead of 11,6; an important improvement.

The mean consumption is good; 7.7 liters each 100 km in mixed conditions (0.9 liters less than the 2,0).

NEW VERSION: 1.6L

A PT European Cruiser

Conscious that the users of the old continent look for vehicles with contained consumptions, Chrysler presents/displays a new version of the PT Cruiser, with a motor of 1,600 cc. and 115 horses.

JOSE WHITE LUIS

MADRID. - Chrysler is adapting to the European market. Conscious that the users of the old continent look for, at the time of buying a car, a vehicle with a consumption rational and, at the same time, less polluting, the mark pertaining to the DaimlerChrysler partnership is introducing in this market new versions nearer this profile.

One of the first models that have received these modifications is the PT Cruiser. Until the moment, the interested ones in buying this original vehicle only had a motorization: a propellent of 1,995 cc. and 141 horses, with a mean consumption near the 8.6 liters.

From now on, the range of the PT Cruiser completes with the new version 1.6L 16V., that incorporates a motor of 1,600 cc. and 115 horses. This propellent is the same one that the one of the Chrysler Neon 1,6 Ls, with slight modifications. The only difference between both vehicles is that the berlina offers 115.5 5,600 horses to rpm and the PT Cruiser develops their 115 6,000 horses to rpm.

This new motor is fruit of "joint venture" between Chrysler and BMW and takes place in the plant of Tritec, in Long Field (Brazil). Of there, that Mini also uses this same propellent, with three powers: 90 (One), 115 (Cooper) and 163 horses, in Mini Cooper S.

According to Chrysler, with this propellent, the PT Cruiser has obtained own consumptions of the European consumers: 10 (urban), 6.3 (extraurban) and 7.7 liters (combined). In addition, to complete range and to increase its presence in the European market, this mark has anticipated the incorporation of a new diesel version, with the motor of 2.2 liters CRD, that will begin to commercialize itself in January of the next year.

This new PT Cruiser commercializes in finished the Clasic and Touring at the cost of 2,994,948 pesetas (18,000 euros) and 3,259,502 pesetas (19,590 euros), respectively. The finished Touring includes of series: front lights antifog, aluminum rims of 16 inches (in the finished Clasic they are of steel and 15 inches), 295/55 tires R16 (195/65 R15 in the Clasic) and radiocassette with CD and six loudspeakers.

In the security section, the new PT Cruiser offers of four series airbags (two frontals and two lateral ones). Nevertheless, the system antiblockade of brakes (ABS) only appears like option and along with the control of traction (to the price de159.000 pesetas/955.61 euros) in the finished Touring. In the Classic, this aid is not available.

Impressions of conduction

In one first taking of contact, something more of power in the low zone of the revolution counters lies down in lack, since this propellent is something sluggish below the 3,000 returns. It is from the 4,000 revolutions, when the four-cylinder one reaches its greater delivery of force and simultaneously it elevates the noise in the interior of the cockpit.

The long developments are something, an aspect that slows down the advancements. Where it emphasizes specially this new car is in the change, since the marches introduce with facility and precision.

Chrysler PT Cruiser Cabrio

Once designers lowered the header and roof and resculpted the rear wheel flares, this latest PT Cruiser styling study began to take on a new personality. The two-door PT Cruiser Convertible features a new rear quarter panel to accommodate the newly designed longer doors. To further enhance this design study's exterior, body-colored bumpers and a chromed-accented grille were included to reinforce its customized look. In addition, the vehicle was lowered by 1.5 inches (38 mm).

"Based on the regular production Chrysler PT Cruiser, the convertible's design emphasizes its free-spirited attitude," said Lance Wagner, Design Director. "We created a more simplified form. For example, the body-side molding recesses were filled in to strengthen its contemporary clean lines. There's purity in the convertible's design that respects the original styling. While its fresh appearance embodies a totally new character, it still retains the excitement of the PT Cruiser."

Since the essential part of any cruising experience is taking your friends along, the PT Cruiser Convertible comfortably seats four passengers with theater-style seating. In this configuration, the rear passengers sit higher than the front passengers giving everyone a command-of-the-road experience.

"Even though the convertible roof was lowered by an inch (25.4 mm), the rear passenger compartment provides ample room and comfort," said Senior Design Manager Jeff Godshall, responsible for the interior.

"Utility and convenience are added in the interior with a speaker and a mesh storage pocket completing the longer front door trim panels and a recessed arm rest and courtesy light in each quarter panel. Equally practical, the rear and front passenger seats fold down for easy storage, providing pass-through for such things as golf clubs, skis or surf boards." said Godshall.

Evoking classic drop-top design, the PT Cruiser Convertible's roof flows seamlessly and creates a 'fastback' appearance when the top is up. The top is power-operated. No powertrain changes have been made to execute this styling study. The vehicle is fitted with New York-themed "Empire" 19-inch cast-aluminum wheels and custom-made Michelin 225/35 ZR19 tires.

"Many will say the Chrysler PT Cruiser Convertible is two vehicles in one," said Creed. "It has a certain modern look when the top is down, with its sport bar and long passenger compartment. Yet when up, the top has a slammed-forward retro-position, much like a '30s custom chopped coupe, emulating the tension of a bow being drawn back. Lower, sleeker with even more attitude, the PT Cruiser Convertible styling study is the latest example of the fun we can have with PT Cruiser. And there's more to come."
